Anything you can see on a Windows screen: how to test each kind of app.

The one rule

If you can see it on your Windows screen, you can test it.The GTS Engine + AI finds each element through the application's accessibility information when it has some, and by sight on the screen when it has none, so it does not matter how the app was built.

That holds for both ways of creating a test: recording it yourself, or describing it in a prompt for your AI assistant to record, on a desktop app, a web page or a phone shown on your screen.

Record in the browser you test with.A few habits keep web tests steady:

HabitWhy
Same window size and browser zoom (100 %) every timePages lay out differently at other sizes.
Start each test from its own addressA Run App step that opens the browser on the right page gives every run the same start.
Close cookie banners and pop-ups before recording, or record closing themSo the run meets the same screen.

Record once, in one browser.GUI Test Runner-Recorder then makes the same test for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, for phones and tablets held either way, for other screen sizes, languages and network speeds.See Every browser and device from one recording.

Desktop applications

Any Windows program: old or new, from any vendor, built with any technology.Choose An app when you record so the automatic checks focus on that program's windows, dialogs and menus.

Android phones and tablets

The phone's screen is mirrored in a window on your computer: what you do on the mirror happens on the phone, and the test replays it the same way.Everything needed for the mirror comes with the installer.

  1. 1

Turn on USB debugging on the phone, once

In the phone's settings, About phone, tap Build number seven times to show Developer options, then switch on USB debugging.

  2. 2

Plug it in with a data cable

When the phone asks whether to allow this computer, tap Allow.

  3. 3

Click Record, then pick A phone

On GUI Test Runner-Recorder's home page, click Record. In the question that follows, the last picture is A phone (Android): it shows the phone as ready, or says what is missing.

A running Android emulator counts as a phone too.

iPhone and iPad

Stream the iPhone or iPad screen live to Windows with a screen-mirroring app, then record that app's window like any other app.Checks see the iPhone's screen exactly as it is shown.

macOS and Linux in a virtual machine

Run macOS or Linux in a virtual machine on your Windows computer, and test your app inside its window.Choose An app and pick the virtual machine's window when you record.

Games

Mouse and keyboard work out of the box.For a game controller, switch on Record and replay gamepad input in GUI Test Runner-Recorder's Preferences: every button press and stick move is recorded, and each press gets a check of the whole screen.

Replaying a controller needs a free driver on the computer that runs the tests. The app tells you when it is missing and opens its download page.
