A tour of GUI Test Studio

Where everything is: the panels, the preview, the properties and the timeline.

Open a test

From GUI Test Runner-Recorder, click Edit in GUI Test Studio on a test's page: the test opens on its timeline. You can also open GUI Test Studio on its own and use File, Open Project, or double-click a .GTS file. Its start screen has a Create a Test... button too, which opens GUI Test Runner-Recorder to record one.

GUI Test Studio is not only for finishing a recording.Use it all through development: build a test from scratch, record one more Scenario into an existing test, or update a check the day a screen changes.

The window at a glance

  1. 1Toolbar: save, undo, capture a frame, and Run Test
  2. 2Palettes: Content Files, Assertions and Events to drag onto the timeline
  3. 3Preview: the recording at the playhead, with the steps drawn on it
  4. 4Properties: everything about the selected block, ready to edit
  5. 5Overview: the whole test at a glance; drag to move around
  6. 6Tracks: the recording, the mouse, the keyboard and the checks
  7. 7Playhead: the moment shown in the preview

The idea is the one of a video editor: every step of the test is a block placed at the moment it happens, and the recording runs along the top so you can always see the screen at that moment.

When you select a check on the timeline, or open it in its editor, the preview shows that check, with its visual target and its search area, wherever the playhead stands.

The preview has a Baseline choice too: pick a profile there and the preview shows that profile's versions of the checks and steps.

The palettes on the left

The left column runs the whole height of the window, beside the timeline. Its tabs, at the top, switch from one panel to another.

TabWhat it holds
Content FilesThe recordings, pictures and other tests of this project.Drag a picture or a test onto the timeline.
AssertionsEvery kind of check, each with a short description of when to use it.Drag one onto the timeline.
EventsEverything a test does: mouse and keyboard gestures, and the Test Flow steps such as Wait, Open Web App and Run App.See Events: what a test does.
ScenariosThe test's Scenarios as a tree, each in its colour. It appears once the test has a Scenario.
Browsers & DevicesFor a web test made for several browsers and devices: every version as a graph, with its state and last run.It appears for such a test only.

View shows two more: Project Structure, the test as a list of tracks and blocks, and Markers, every note in time order.

Preferences, Layout rearranges the window with a preset: Default, Editing, Review or Focus.Your own arrangement can be saved to a .gtslayout file and loaded on another computer.

The Assertions palette: drag a check to the moment it should happen.
Content Files: your recordings, pictures and the tests added as Scenarios.

The Properties panel

Click any block and the Properties panel shows everything about it.Its card at the top holds the block's name and when it happens. The tabs under it hold its settings: Parameters, the check's own tab, Baselines, Preview & Execution and, for a gesture, Advanced: Events Inside.Only the tabs that apply to the block are shown, and each section has a question-mark button that explains it.

With nothing selected, the panel shows the test itself, in four tabs: General, Screen, Baseline Profiles and Versions.

The Properties panel of a visual check.
Every question mark opens a plain explanation.

Save and run

Run Test, the blue button of the toolbar, saves the test and starts it in GUI Test Runner-Recorder.GUI Test Studio steps aside while the test runs on your screen, and comes back when you close the runner.

Its arrow offers Save & Run From Playhead Position: the run starts at the moment under the playhead, which saves time when you are working on the end of a long test. The button then takes the name of the way you chose last. For a web test made for several browsers and devices, the arrow also runs one of them, or runs the test with or without a browser window.See Run a test.
