Layout and group checks

Check where things stand, or several checks of one screen at once.

Layout Assert

A Layout Assert checks where things stand, not what they look like or say: the fields of a form, the buttons of a dialog, the cards of a dashboard. It catches a button pushed off screen, two elements overlapping, a column that shifted.

Recorded arrangementConfirmCancelThis runConfirmCancel
A Layout check compares where the elements stand. Here the Cancel button slid under the Confirm button: every element still looks right, but the arrangement is broken, and the check names the element that moved.

Make a Layout Assert

  1. 1

Drop a Layout Assert where the screen is complete

From the Assertions palette, onto the Assertion track, at a moment when everything is on screen.

  2. 2

    Click Detect Elements

The GTS Engine + AI finds every element of the screen by itself: texts, buttons, fields, pictures. Each one gets a name you can change.

  3. 3

    Keep what matters

Untick the elements that do not need to stay in place, such as an advert.Add one by drawing a rectangle around it.

  4. 4

    Read the verdict and Apply

The strip under the frame says whether the arrangement holds. To try it on other frames, move along the recording under Use Another Frame....

When it does not hold

The editor and the report name each element that moved, by how much, and why it counts. When a setting would make the check hold, it is offered with one click, and tried first so you know it works.

How tolerant it is

SettingWhat it means
Position toleranceHow far, in pixels, an element may stand from its place.
Size toleranceHow much bigger or smaller an element may be.
Must be in placeThe share of the elements that must stand where they belong.
The arrangement may sit elsewhereThe whole group may move together, as when a window opens at another place.
Texts may changeA text may change its words, and so its width, without counting as moved.

Group Assert

A Group Assert checks several things of one screen at the same moment: each member is an ordinary visual or text check. It keeps a busy screen readable on the timeline, as one block instead of ten.

ExampleA confirmation dialog

One Group Assert with four members: the dialog's title (a text check), its message (a text check), the Confirm button and the Cancel button (visual checks).Tick "Also assert the layout" and the group also checks that they stand together as they did.

Make a Group Assert

  1. 1

Drop a Group Assert and open it

At the moment the screen you want to check is complete.

  2. 2

    Click Detect Elements

Every element is proposed as the check it deserves: a picture for what is drawn, a text check for what is written, a Dynamic Text check for a value that changes.Click the ones to keep, or click Add All.The filter above the list, Visual, Fixed Text or Dynamic Text, shows one kind at a time.

  3. 3

    Adjust and Apply

Change a member from a picture to a text check, or the reverse, if you know better. The strip under the frame says whether every member is found.
