Text checks

Check words, values that change, missing text and how often a text appears.

Four kinds of text check

A text check asks the application what the element says, through its accessibility information or the web page itself, and reads the words on the screen the way you would when the application cannot tell.It passes when the words are right, even if the font, the colour or the design changed.

Text Assert

Welcome back, Anna

"Welcome back" is there

Text Absent Assert

waits until "Loading..." is gone

Dynamic Text Assert

Text Count Assert

Error · Error

"Error" at most 0 times

Four ways to check text. The GTS Engine asks the app what an element says, and reads the words on the screen when the app cannot tell, so a check never depends on how the app was built.

Text Assert

Waits until a given text is on screen.Best for labels, titles, messages and confirmations whose words never change.

ExampleDid the order go through?

After clicking Place Order, a Text Assert waits for "Order confirmed".A designer can restyle the message as often as they like; the test only fails if the words are wrong or missing.

Mark the text on the frame

  1. 1

    Open the Text Assert Editor

Select the check and click Text Match... in the Properties panel. The frame of the recording at that moment opens. To read another moment, click Use Another Frame....

  2. 2

Draw a rectangle around the text

The text inside is read at once and becomes what the check expects.Correct it if you want different words.

  3. 3

Read the verdict under the frame

The editor runs the check on that frame and says whether it would pass, before you run anything.

How exact the words must be

PrecisionWhat it acceptsUse it for
TolerantEvery letter and digit must be there.Spacing, accents, quote marks and characters that look alike are forgiven.Almost everything. The default.
ExactCharacter for character.Codes, passwords shown on screen, anything where one character matters.
SimilarMost of the characters must match (90 % by default), and digits must always be right.Long sentences that change slightly between versions.

Match case also makes capitals count: "Sign In" then differs from "Sign in".

Text Absent Assert

Waits until a text is gone: "Loading...", "Saving", an error message that must not stay.It passes once the text has stayed away for a moment, and fails if it is still there when its time runs out.

Dynamic Text Assert

Some values change on every run: today's date, an order number, a total.A Dynamic Text Assert checks the kind of value, its shape, not the value itself.

Monday's run

Tuesday's run

Not a currency

A Dynamic Text check waits for a value of the right kind, here an amount of money, whatever the amount is.It fails when something else stands there.

Mark the value on the frame and the editor picks the right shape by itself. You can also choose another shape, or write your own pattern for an unusual format.

Your own pattern

When no built-in shape fits, such as your own order numbers, choose Custom and describe the shape with a pattern.A pattern is a short description of what a value looks like, written with a few symbols.Technical people call it a regular expression, or regex.

SymbolMeansExample
\dAny digit, 0 to 9\d\d matches 42
[A-Z]Any capital letter[A-Z]\d matches B7
+One or more of what comes before\d+ matches 7 and 2041
{3}Exactly three of what comes before\d{3} matches 204
( | )Either one or the other(Paid|Due) matches Paid
\.A real dotv\d\.\d matches v2.1
Anything elseExactly that characterORD- matches ORD-

Try it here: pick an example or type your own pattern, and see which values it accepts.

Try it
  • ORD-these exact letters
  • \dany digit
  • {5}exactly five of them
  • ORD-20418Passes
  • ORD-7Fails
  • INV-20418Fails

Text Count Assert

Counts how many times a text appears and holds it to a rule: exactly, at least, at most, or between two numbers.

ExampleNo errors in the list

A Text Count Assert on "Error" with the rule "at most 0" fails the moment any row of the import report says Error.

Languages

Text checks read English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Arabic.Automatic picks the language from the text itself and from your Windows languages; pick one yourself for short words that exist in several languages.

Recognition quality trades speed for care: Best is the most careful, Balanced is a little quicker, Fast is the quickest.
